Remember 9/11 today. Remember also that our most serious threat since has been domestic terrorists.
Funny thing about MLB teams coming off a walk off win. Their winning percentage does not seem to have much to do with how they respond. The six best teams since 2017 are LAD (21-5); BOS(14-5); KCR(10-4); CHC(10-4); OAK(18-8); and COL(12-6).The six worst teams are ATL(5-13); MIA(5-11); MIN(4-8); CIN (4-8); TOR(7-12); and DET(5-8). Odd groupings. My own theory is that after a WOW some teams go out and celebrate or sit in front of the TV drinking while they watch the replay of the game until 4am. Some teams go home and go to bed. No possible verification on that one, though!
The Tigers are coming off a hard-fought, emotional 12-11 walk off win over the Yankees last night where they had to come from behind. I consider today’s game nearly a toss up. The Yankees send CC Sabathia to the mound tonight. The Yankees have lost his last 5 starts, with CC giving up 19 runs and not lasting over 4.1 innings. The Tigers start Matthew Boyd tonight. The best thing that I can say about Matthew is that his team has been hitting for him recently. Boyd is coming off two wins, 10-8 and 6-4, where he allowed a total of 8 runs on 16 hits and four home runs; you are not supposed to be able to get wins that way! The Yankees will likely out-hit DET, as they are 10-1 since 2017 off a walk off loss, and the Tigers are 1-6 since 2015 off games where they score 12 runs.
MIL won last night so these Forum picks stand at 11-2 since late August. Could I have been more wrong about the Dodgers! I have just one selection tonight on TBR-147 going up against TEX.
TBR is in the thick of the wild card race, staying just ahead of OAK and CLE. With just 16 games left in their season, every one of these will be playoff-serious. As I have mentioned, I like strong road favorites who have won their last game by coming from behind. The Rays are 10-1 in this situation over the last decade and they have limited their opponents to an average of 2.0 runs in these games, going 2-8-1 OU. Andrew Kittredge has acted as an opener for the Rays in the latter part of this season, usually going 2-3 innings. Andrew has given up 1-3 runs in half of these games, but the Rays are 6-1 in his “starts” this season with their excellent bullpen.
The Rangers have several disadvantages tonight. First, they are a dog coming off a game where they scored infrequently. The Rangers as a dog are 3-6 this year coming off games where they scored in two or fewer innings. Second, TEX is a home dog tonight coming off a game where they had at least 10 strikeouts. The Rangers are 2-8 in the last two seasons in this situation. Finally, Ariel Jurado starts for TEX tonight. TEX is 1-8 with him starting since July 1st, scoring an average of 3.89 runs and allowing, wait for it, 8.22 runs. 8.22 runs.
Did you know that Texas has five of the 15 largest cities in the U.S. by population, and that Houston is the fourth largest city in the country? Who cares, I'm from Chicago!
